Primary 1 and 2 pupils enjoy spending an afternoon each week in Roley’s Wood, a local woodland area. The pupils experience a wide range of activities from den building to scavenger hunts and creating natural art. Each week the pupils search for a ‘magic tin’ hidden in the woodland to reveal a clue for the afternoon’s session. It is the highlight of a lot of our pupil’s week and research shows it has a positive impact on children’s emotional, physical and mental wellbeing.
The pupils are encouraged to be responsible citizens, taking charge of looking after the local environment with regular litter picks. They experience success in their learning each week through completing the varied opportunities. Team building and paired learning activities provide children the chance to be effective contributors. Our pupils demonstrate confidence as they take ownership of their learning and the natural environment.
We are exceptionally lucky at Currie Primary School to have such a strong partnership with parents. Each week parents volunteer their own time to support our sessions. The knowledge, skills, enthusiasm and expertise they pass onto the pupils in these sessions is invaluable.
As these sessions have developed over the past two years, it has been lovely to hear from pupil’s how impactful these sessions are. “I love going to Roley’s and helping to clean up the animal’s homes”. “The home that I built for the fairies had some food inside! They must have gone in!” “I love listening to the water in the meditations we do.” “Roley’s Wood is the best part ever in the week, I get to go at weekends now too!” “I wish we could go to Roley’s every day.”
