Good bye to Tam

tam.jpg

We said good-bye to Tam, one of our school Crossing Patrol Officers in assembly on Friday as he has decided to retire. Tam has a long history with our school as his own, now grown up, children were pupils at Riccarton Primary and he has been one of our Crossing Patrol Officers for the last 8 years. Tam is a firm favourite with many of our pupils who cross with him every day and we are sorry to see him go. We all wish him a long and happy retirement.

From the 21st to the 25th of May, the school will be celebrating Walk to School Week. If you can, we would encourage you to walk, cycle or scoot to school instead of taking the car. If you must drive, try dropping off a couple of streets away to allow you a short walk to school. On Friday the 25th, we will be having a Happy Shoesday where pupils can wear shoes that make their feet happy. Comfortable slippers, trainers, etc. are all welcome. Please do not wear heels or Heelys.

Kira The Machine

Thank you to everyone who supported our Hats4kira in school today by wearing a hat, donating money or simply for sending your best wishes to help a very sick young lady receive the medical attention she needs. As a school we raised £686.01 and Hazel one of our School Crossing Patrol Officers, who was collecting money from everyone coming to and passing school, raised £560.02. This gives a collective total of  £1246.03 which is an amazing amount of money! Once more the generosity of everyone in the Currie area shows no limits – a huge thank you to everyone for your incredible generosity!

P6 Year of the Sea 2018

P6 have been working with Heriot Watt University as part of their ‘Year of the Sea 2018’. Last week we had a visit from Alex, a lecturer and Akoh a Civil Engineering student who set us the task of coming up with problems and solutions linked to the sea that they took back to the university students. The students then had a week to work on the problems set and devise solutions for them .

Today P6 went on a visit to Heriot Watt University to see how the students got on solving the problems we had set for them. This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to see how science, technology and engineering can all work together to solve real life problems. The children scored the students on their solutions and presentations. They found this visit very interesting especially as they were able to see how the students would solve the problems they had set for them. The children asked excellent questions as they were going around the different stalls and kept the students on their toes!

Kira The Machine Appeal

Many of you may have seen footage recently on TV and social media of the campaign for Kira the Machine.  Kira is a 14 year old from Craiglockhart who is a pupil at Firrhill High School.  She has been fighting high-risk Neuroblastoma since she was 11.  She urgently needs an operation to completely remove the disease.  Despite gruelling treatment and three operations already, her cancer has come back twice.

Now her best hope of being disease-free is life-saving surgery in the USA by a world renowned specialist surgeon in New York.

Kira’s family have to raise £350,000 by 10th May and are desperately appealing to raise funds.

We are having a Hats4Kira day on Friday 4th May.  This is completely optional but if the children would like to pay £1  to wear a hat/silly hairstyle or wig to school on that day it would support an excellent cause.
