Maths Fun Day

Maths Day

4 people from P5 went to a Maths Fun day at Merchiston Castle School. The 4 people were Alex, Shree, josh and Kai. It wasn’t too far away. When we got there, we got a drink and a biscuit then we went into the hall. Once we were there we sat at a table. There were around 8 tables in a row and each one was a station. There were different activities at each station, the easiest was making squares with blocks. We also played a game called Flow on the iPads and other maths puzzles. Lunch was delicious. After lunch we had 45 minutes to answer as many maths puzzles as we could – we were spilt into 2 teams and had to answer questions then give our answers to our team mates. This activity was a little stressful as it was timed. At the end a mathematician talked to us about Magic Squares and how they work. All in all, it was a fun day.

Sports Relief 2020

P7 organised a fun day of activities for us all for Sports Relief as part of the Citizenship Award our older pupils work towards achieving. Each class was involved in a  variety of sporting challenges such as beat the goalie, hockey dribble, basketball shooting, as well as everyone’s favourite, throwing wet sponges at P7! P7 also organised a very successful Bake Sale and everyone wore red to school. A fun morning to support a fabulous charity. Well done P7!

Orphans of the Tide Author Visit

On Wednesday 19th February, Struan Murray came to our school to talk to the P5-7 classes and the members of the Reading Council, about his new book Orphans of the Tide that starts with a whale on the roof of a church. He told us about the main character who was an inventor and how the story takes place under the sea as well as in the last city in the world!

Struan told us he comes from a family of rowdy red heads and he is a scientist by day, but a writer by night. His favourite animal is the blue whale.

He shared with us how he liked comics when he was a child and how he liked to draw. He had his picture of Pingu and Pinga published in the official Pingu magazine when he was 7 years old. He wrote a newspaper called The Daily Sausage and he sold them to all the parents for 20p when he was at school in Edinburgh.

Struan liked to doodle as child and teenager and this helped to inspire him when writing stories. He also got inspiration from places in Edinburgh such as Deep-Sea World and the museum on Chamber Street.

Pupils learned about how the book cover of Orphans of the Tide was designed and voted for the one they liked best.

Struan then asked us to choose a character and setting for the type of story they wanted to create. We chose to have the story take place in a haunted library in a mansion, with a cook and a detective. This was fun and showed us how easy it can be to make up a story.

We were also very lucky to be able to buy his book and get it signed before it was available in the shops.

Currie Primary – sportscotland Gold School Sport Award

We had a lovely morning in school this morning, celebrating our sportscotland Gold School Sports Award. We started off with a Hit Workout in the playground then had a special assembly organised by Mrs Elliot, our PE teacher, celebrating all the successes and enthusiasm our former and current pupils have in their chosen sports. Throughout the day it was just wonderful to see the wide rage of sports our pupils are involved in!

The sportscotland School Sport Award is a national, Lottery funded initiative designed to encourage schools to continuously improve physical education (PE) and school sport opportunities.

The sportscotland School Sport Award:

  • Encourages schools to self-reflect and continuously improve
  • Puts young people at the forefront of the decision making and planning of PE and sport in

their school

  • Helps schools to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in PE & school

sport

  • Helps schools to put PE & school sport at the heart of their planning, practice and ethos
  • Recognises and celebrates successful PE & school sport models

Currie Primary School have been awarded the sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for their commitment to sport and physical activity. At our school assembly this morning, the school’s Sports Committee, were presented the Gold Award, by Michelle Bone, Partnership Manager at sportscotland. The school have been recognised for providing a wide range of opportunities, through PE, school sporting events and competitions, as well as school sports teams and clubs. As a school, we are grateful to the support we get from Active Schools, our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and all our volunteer coaches.

Over the years, the school have worked to develop local partnerships and children are actively encouraged to take part in a range of sports. The school understands the important role that sport plays in both the children’s physical and mental health and is proud to recognise the wider achievements of its pupils.

Today’s assembly highlighted the school’s commitment to sport, with several current and former pupils answering questions from the audience on their chosen sport. Several of those interviewed represent Scotland in a range of sports including ice-hockey, judo, taekwondo and gymnastics, with others representing football teams; Hearts, Hibs and St Johnstone. They were also joined by some of their coaches, who were also on hand to answer the children’s questions.

The highlight of the morning was a visit by Gavin Scott, former Scotland rugby team manager and now Scottish Rugby Operations Director, who came along with the Calcutta Cup, on the eve of the big game between Scotland and England.

The school are extremely proud of the sporting achievements of all their pupils and are pleased to have been awarded with the Gold Award in recognition of their efforts to promote sport across the school and the local community.

“I was delighted to be part of this morning’s celebrations to award Currie Primary School with their sportscotland Gold School Sport Award. The Gold Award is richly deserved recognition of Currie Primary School’s achievements to put quality PE and sport at the heart of the schools planning, practice and ethos. It was fantastic to hear from current and former school pupils and their coaches sharing their sporting journeys. On behalf of sportscotland I would like to thank all the staff, pupils, active schools and other partners for your time and effort to complete the Gold Award application and congratulate you again on this fantastic achievement.”

Michelle Bone, Partnership Manager, sportscotland

“This is a marvellous achievement for Currie Primary. We have always had a strong commitment to sport and physical activity across the school. This has been recognised by Sport Scotland who have presented us with the Gold Award at assembly this morning. A number of current and former pupils are representing Scotland at their chosen sport, which is testament to the emphasis we place on sport and the children’s wider achievements.”
